"THE TRAINING IS 100% OF THE VICTORY." - Anderson Silva, Current UFC Middleweight Champion.
This is totally true with it comes to competition as well as life in general. Indeed your performance is measured by the time and effort you put in. Many times, we believe that we can get by on pure talent or luck, but what really makes the difference is the effort and hardwork that is put behind the scenes.
You'll see that 95% of the time, the guy who is not as athletic and takes weeks to learn a technique or form, but works twice as hard as the guy who picks it up in a day will outlast and out-perform the second guy. Why? It's because practice makes perfect.
Training and practice is a key component to achievement and victory. This is a general rule of thumb and can be applied to all aspects of life.
If we wish to succeed in our studies, then we train our minds by studying. Likewise, if we wish to success in martial arts, then we train our minds, bodies and spirit for the day that you will be tested whether its a tournament or an actual promotion test.
This is not so different from Islam. If we wish to succeed in this life and receive the rewards of the hereafter, then we train our minds with the remembrance of Allah, we train our bodies to perform acts that are pleasing to Allah, and we purify our spirit and heart from acts that are displeasing to Allah.
So indeed, training is 100% of the victory.
With that say....PLAY HARD! TRAIN HARDER!!!
